Where we are
Mosiah 25 is the BoM's-master-chapter of-the-great-gathering and-the-three-records-read and-the-seven-churches-organized. The chapter is the moment-the-three-groups become-one — the descendants-of-Mulek (the people-of-Zarahemla), the descendants-of-Nephi (Mosiah-II's-Nephites), the descendants-of-Zeniff-Noah-Limhi (the Mosiah-7-22-colony), and-the-Alma-Church-of-Mosiah-18-and-23-24. The chapter has Mosiah-II reading-the-records-aloud to-the-gathered-people; the demographic-fact-of-the-Mulekite-majority being-quietly-acknowledged; all-the-people becoming-known-by-the-Nephite-name; Limhi's-people being-baptized by-Alma's-priesthood-authority; and Alma being-formally-authorized-by-Mosiah to-organize-the-Church-throughout-the-land into-seven-churches. The chapter is therefore the BoM's-clearest ecclesial-founding-moment of-the-Mosiah-cycle.
The chapter has four movements: (1) the gathering and the reading-of-the-records (vv. 1–8); (2) the joy-and-the-mourning of-the-people (vv. 9–13); (3) the addresses of-Mosiah and-Alma (vv. 14–16); (4) the baptisms and-the-seven-churches (vv. 17–24).
For the reader, the chapter contains five especially load-bearing texts: (1) v. 2 now there were not so many of the children of Nephi, or so many of those who were descendants of Nephi, as there were of the people of Zarahemla, who was a descendant of Mulek, and those who came with him into the wilderness — the chapter's-master Mulekite-majority statement; (2) v. 13 and now all the people of Zarahemla were numbered with the Nephites, and this because the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi — the chapter's-master all-numbered-with-the-Nephites statement; (3) v. 18 therefore Alma did go forth into the water and did baptize them; yea, he did baptize them after the manner he did his brethren in the waters of Mormon; yea, and as many as he did baptize did belong to the church of God; and this because of their belief on the words of Alma — the chapter's-master baptism-by-Alma statement; (4) v. 19 and it came to pass that king Mosiah granted unto Alma that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church — the chapter's-master authorization-to-establish-churches statement; (5) v. 22 and thus, notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea, even the church of God; for there was nothing preached in all the churches except it were repentance and faith in God — the chapter's-master one-Church-many-congregations statement.
The gathering and the reading of the records (verses 1–8)
And now king Mosiah caused that all the people should be gathered together. — Mosiah 25:1
The chapter opens with the great-gathering. King Mosiah caused that all the people should be gathered together. The doctrine: the chapter has-a-king-called-corporate-assembly, echoing King-Benjamin's-temple-gathering of-Mosiah-2:1-7 but-now-with-additional-groups-present. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the king-as-convener of-the-corporate-witness — the second-such-assembly under-the-Mosiah-line. Same king-convenes-the-assembly grammar as 2 Chr. 30:1's-Hezekiah-sent-to-all-Israel-and-Judah; Neh. 8:1's-all-the-people-gathered-themselves-together; 2 Kgs. 23:1-3's-Josiah's-renewal-of-the-covenant. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the king-convenes-the-corporate-witness providence.
Now there were not so many of the children of Nephi, or so many of those who were descendants of Nephi, as there were of the people of Zarahemla, who was a descendant of Mulek, and those who came with him into the wilderness. — Mosiah 25:2
The chapter's master-Mulekite-majority verse. There were not so many of the children of Nephi, or so many of those who were descendants of Nephi, as there were of the people of Zarahemla, who was a descendant of Mulek. The doctrine: the chapter has the demographic-fact preserved-with-precision — the Mulekites (descendants-of-Mulek, son-of-Zedekiah-the-king-of-Judah) were-the-majority of-the-land-of-Zarahemla, even-as-the-kingdom-was-Nephite. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the Mulekite-majority-but-Nephite-throne arrangement that-characterizes-the-Mosiah-and-Alma-period.
The phrase a descendant of Mulek — the chapter's-precise reference back to Omni 1:14-19. The doctrine: Mulek (Hebrew מֻלֶּךְ, little king or king's-son — likely a hypocoristic of Malkiyahu, mentioned in Jer. 38:6 as Malchiah son of Hammelech / the king) was the last-surviving-son of-Zedekiah, the-final-king-of-Judah before-the-Babylonian-destruction; he-escaped-Jerusalem during-the-fall in-587/586 BC and-was-brought-to-the-New-World by-the-Lord. The chapter is therefore quietly-significant — the Mulekite-line preserves-the-Davidic-succession (Zedekiah's line back-through-Josiah-to-David) into-the-BoM-narrative; the chapter is one-of-the-BoM's-quiet-anchors for-the-Davidic-line-not-broken-by-Babylon doctrine.
Yea, there were not so many of the descendants of Nephi as there were of the descendants of Zarahemla, who was a descendant of Mulek. — Mosiah 25:3
The chapter repeats the Mulekite-majority for-emphasis. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-narrator-Mormon repeating-the-fact, which-is-not-his-usual-style; the repetition suggests-the-fact's-significance for-Mormon's-purposes — the Nephite-throne-rule has-been resting-on-a-Mulekite-majority and-the-arrangement is-stable only-by-the-grace-of-good-kings. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the foundation-fragility of-the-Nephite-throne — a-fact-that-will-explode-into-civil-war by-the-time-of-Amalickiah.
And it came to pass that Mosiah did read, and caused to be read, the records of Zeniff to his people; yea, he read the records of the people of Zeniff, from the time they left the land of Zarahemla until they returned again. — Mosiah 25:5
The chapter records the reading-of-Zeniff's-record. Mosiah did read, and caused to be read, the records of Zeniff to his people. The doctrine: the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the king-reads-the-records publicly — the same Neh. 8:1-3's-Ezra-reads-the-book-of-the-law-in-the-presence-of-all-the-people pattern; the same Josh. 8:34-35's-Joshua-read-all-the-words-of-the-law before-all-the-congregation pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Esdran articulation of-the-public-reading-of-the-record discipline.
And he also read the account of Alma and his brethren, and all their afflictions, from the time they left the land of Zarahemla until the time they returned again. — Mosiah 25:6
The chapter records the reading-of-Alma's-record. He also read the account of Alma and his brethren, and all their afflictions. The doctrine: the chapter has-two-records-read-publicly — the Zeniff-Noah-Limhi-chronicle and the Alma-Helam-chronicle; the chapter therefore has the people-of-Zarahemla learning-the-full-story of-both-colonies in-one-corporate-hearing. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the corporate-receiving-of-the-history doctrine — a-people-becomes-one-people when-it-receives-its-history-together.
And now, when Mosiah had made an end of reading the records, his people who tarried in the land were struck with wonder and amazement. — Mosiah 25:7
The chapter records the wonder-and-amazement. His people who tarried in the land were struck with wonder and amazement. The doctrine: the chapter has the people-of-Zarahemla learning-for-the-first-time the-fate-of-the-Zeniff-and-Alma-colonies; the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the corporate-reaction-to-the-recovered-history pattern. The same Neh. 8:9's-the people wept, when they heard the words of the law grammar.
For they knew not what to think; for when they beheld those that had been delivered out of bondage they were filled with exceedingly great joy. — Mosiah 25:8
The chapter records the joy-at-the-delivered. When they beheld those that had been delivered out of bondage they were filled with exceedingly great joy. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-already-free rejoicing-over-the-newly-delivered; the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the corporate-joy-at-the-deliverance-of-others discipline. Same rejoice-with-them-that-rejoice grammar as Rom. 12:15; Lk. 15:6's-rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the joy-at-the-other's-deliverance discipline.
The joy and the mourning of the people (verses 9–13)
And again, when they thought of their brethren who had been slain by the Lamanites they were filled with sorrow, and even shed many tears of sorrow. — Mosiah 25:9
The chapter records the mourning-for-the-slain. When they thought of their brethren who had been slain by the Lamanites they were filled with sorrow. The doctrine: the chapter has the joy-and-the-sorrow-mingled — the same Ezr. 3:12-13's-people who shouted for joy and people who wept at the rebuilt foundations of the temple, the noise of the shouting was indistinguishable from the noise of the weeping. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the mingled-joy-and-sorrow at-the-corporate-recovery-of-history; the same complex-emotional-truth that-mature-faith-allows.
And again, when they thought of the immediate goodness of God, and his power in delivering Alma and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites and of bondage, they did raise their voices and give thanks to God. — Mosiah 25:10
The chapter records the corporate-thanks for-Alma's-deliverance. They did raise their voices and give thanks to God. The doctrine: the chapter has the people-of-Zarahemla joining-in-the-thanks-for-Alma's-deliverance; the same David-celebrates-the-ark's-return pattern (2 Sam. 6:14-15). The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the corporate-thanksgiving-for-the-deliverance-of-others discipline.
And again, when they thought upon the Lamanites, who were their brethren, of their sinful and polluted state, they were filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls. — Mosiah 25:11
The chapter records the pain-and-anguish for-the-Lamanites. They were filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls. The doctrine: the chapter has the gathered-Nephites grieving the-spiritual-condition of-the-Lamanites who-are-their-brethren; the same Rom. 9:1-3's-Paul-grieves-for-Israel pattern, the same Lk. 19:41-42's-Christ-weeps-over-Jerusalem pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the agony-for-the-enemy's-soul discipline — the chapter is laying-the-affective-foundation for-the-sons-of-Mosiah's-missionary-charge of-Mosiah 28. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the missionary-impulse-born-of-grief discipline — the foundation of-Mosiah-28's-missionary-charge is-laid here.
And it came to pass that those who were the children of Amulon and his brethren, who had taken to wife the daughters of the Lamanites, were displeased with the conduct of their fathers, and they would no longer be called by the names of their fathers, therefore they took upon themselves the name of Nephi, that they might be called the children of Nephi and be numbered among those who were called Nephites. — Mosiah 25:12
The chapter records the Amulonite-children-renouncing their-fathers. The children of Amulon and his brethren… were displeased with the conduct of their fathers, and they would no longer be called by the names of their fathers, therefore they took upon themselves the name of Nephi. The doctrine: the chapter has the second-generation choosing-the-name of-virtue rather-than-the-name of-their-fathers; the same Ezek. 18 doctrine — the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the children's-righteous-renouncement of-the-fathers'-name discipline — the discipline that-the-name-one-bears is-a-choice, not-a-fate. Same renounce-the-father's-name grammar as Ezek. 18:20; Acts 16:1-3 (Timothy-half-Greek-takes-the-Jewish-circumcision); Acts 26:5 (Paul on-his-former-life).
And now all the people of Zarahemla were numbered with the Nephites, and this because the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi. — Mosiah 25:13
The chapter's master-all-numbered-with-the-Nephites verse. All the people of Zarahemla were numbered with the Nephites, and this because the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi. The doctrine: the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the political-naming-by-the-throne providence; the throne is-Nephite, so-the-united-people takes-the-name-Nephite. The chapter is the formal-political-establishment of-the-Nephite-name as-the-name of-the-united-people. The chapter is also the BoM's-clearest-text-on the name-by-throne not-by-blood discipline — the Mulekite-majority takes the-Nephite-name not-because-of-blood but-because-of-political-allegiance.
The phrase the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi — the chapter's-precise-political-history. The doctrine: the chapter is preserving the Nephite-dynastic-rule has-been-stable from-Nephi through-Mosiah-I to-Mosiah-II — the same Davidic-style dynastic-continuity. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the Nephite-dynastic-continuity providence; the chapter will be overturned-in-Mosiah-29 when-the-judges-replace-the-kings.
The addresses of Mosiah and Alma (verses 14–16)
And now it came to pass that when Mosiah had made an end of speaking and reading to the people, he desired that Alma should also speak to the people. — Mosiah 25:14
The chapter records the king's-invitation to-the-prophet to-speak. He desired that Alma should also speak to the people. The doctrine: the chapter has the king-and-the-prophet-sharing-the-pulpit — the same Ezra-and-Nehemiah pattern; the king-and-the-priest cooperating-in-the-corporate-instruction. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the king-and-the-prophet-cooperate discipline.
And Alma did speak unto them, when they were assembled together in large bodies, and he went from one body to another, preaching unto the people repentance and faith on the Lord. — Mosiah 25:15
The chapter records Alma's-circuit-preaching. He went from one body to another, preaching unto the people repentance and faith on the Lord. The doctrine: the chapter has-Alma in-circuit-preacher mode — the same Lk. 4:43-44's-Christ-preaching-in-the-synagogues-of-Galilee pattern; the same Acts 8:4's-they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Synoptic articulation of-the-itinerant-preaching discipline.
The phrase preaching unto the people repentance and faith on the Lord — the chapter's-precise-gospel-summary. The doctrine: the chapter has the Mosiah-period gospel-message-as repentance-and-faith — the same Acts 20:21's-repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ summary. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Pauline articulation of-the-two-fold-gospel-summary.
And he did exhort the people of Limhi and his brethren, all those that had been delivered out of bondage, that they should remember that it was the Lord that did deliver them. — Mosiah 25:16
The chapter records the remember-the-Lord-delivered-you exhortation. He did exhort the people of Limhi and his brethren… that they should remember that it was the Lord that did deliver them. The doctrine: the chapter has the remember-the-deliverance discipline preached-by-Alma — the same Deut. 8:2's-thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the remember-the-deliverance discipline as-the-foundation-of-faith.
The baptisms and the seven churches (verses 17–24)
And it came to pass that after Alma had taught the people many things, and had made an end of speaking to them, that king Limhi was desirous that he might be baptized; and all his people were desirous that they might be baptized also. — Mosiah 25:17
The chapter records the king-and-the-people-desiring-baptism. King Limhi was desirous that he might be baptized; and all his people were desirous that they might be baptized also. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-king-leading-the-people into-baptism; the same David-leading-Israel-in-worship pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the king-as-baptismal-exemplar — the chapter has Limhi-going-down-to-the-water as-the-first-baptism, then-his-people-following. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the leader-leads-into-the-water-first discipline.
Therefore Alma did go forth into the water and did baptize them; yea, he did baptize them after the manner he did his brethren in the waters of Mormon; yea, and as many as he did baptize did belong to the church of God; and this because of their belief on the words of Alma. — Mosiah 25:18
The chapter's master-baptism-by-Alma verse. Alma did go forth into the water and did baptize them; yea, he did baptize them after the manner he did his brethren in the waters of Mormon; yea, and as many as he did baptize did belong to the church of God; and this because of their belief on the words of Alma. The doctrine: the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the long-deferred-baptism-finally-administered providence — the chapter resolves the Mosiah 21:33-35 tension (the desire-for-baptism deferred for-lack-of-authority) by-bringing-Limhi's-people to-Alma, the authorized-administrator. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the authority-by-the-right-administrator doctrine. Same after-the-manner grammar as Acts 8:38-39's-Philip-baptizes-the-Ethiopian; Acts 16:14-15's-Lydia-and-her-household baptized. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the long-deferred-baptism-fulfilled providence.
The phrase as many as he did baptize did belong to the church of God; and this because of their belief on the words of Alma — the chapter's-precise-church-membership formula. The doctrine: the chapter has belief-on-the-words-of-the-authorized-minister as-the-condition for-baptismal-incorporation into-the-Church; the same Acts 2:41's-then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls pattern. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest pre-Apostolic articulations of the believe-receive-baptize-become-Church-member sequence.
And it came to pass that king Mosiah granted unto Alma that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church. — Mosiah 25:19
The chapter's master-authorization-to-establish-churches verse. King Mosiah granted unto Alma that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-king-formally-granting-the-Church its-organizational-charter throughout-the-land; the same Cyrus-issues-the-decree-for-the-temple-rebuilding pattern (Ezra 1:2-4) in-ecclesial-key. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the political-king-authorizes-the-ecclesial-organization providence — the church-and-state arrangement-of-the-Mosiah-period. The chapter is the foundational-text for-the-Alma-led-Church that-will-dominate-the-rest-of-Mosiah-and-the-Alma-books.
The phrase power to ordain priests and teachers — the chapter's-precise-priesthood-vocabulary. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-two-office structure — priests and teachers — that-will-characterize-the-Mosiah-and-Alma Church; the same priests-and-teachers offices preserved-in-the-Restoration's-Aaronic-priesthood (D&C 20:46-59). The chapter is therefore one-of-the-most-foundational-texts for-the-Restoration's-Aaronic-priesthood-organization.
Now this was done because there were so many people that they could not all be governed by one teacher; neither could they all hear the word of God in one assembly; — Mosiah 25:20
The chapter records the practical-rationale for-multiple-congregations. There were so many people that they could not all be governed by one teacher; neither could they all hear the word of God in one assembly. The doctrine: the chapter has the practical-pastoral-wisdom for-the-multi-congregation Church; the same Ex. 18:17-23's-Jethro-counsels-Moses to-share-the-leadership-load pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Acts-6 articulation of-the-share-the-leadership-load discipline.
Therefore they did assemble themselves together in different bodies, being called churches; every church having their priests and their teachers, and every priest preaching the word according as it was delivered to him by the mouth of Alma. — Mosiah 25:21
The chapter records the seven-fold organization. They did assemble themselves together in different bodies, being called churches; every church having their priests and their teachers, and every priest preaching the word according as it was delivered to him by the mouth of Alma. The doctrine: the chapter has-the-unified-message preserved by-the-singular-Alma-source; the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the unified-doctrine-preserved-by-the-singular-prophetic-source providence. The chapter is the foundational-text for-the-LDS-doctrine of-correlated-curriculum across-distinct-congregations — all-the-same-message-from-the-prophet's-mouth.
And thus, notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea, even the church of God; for there was nothing preached in all the churches except it were repentance and faith in God. — Mosiah 25:22
The chapter's master-one-Church-many-congregations verse. Notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea, even the church of God; for there was nothing preached in all the churches except it were repentance and faith in God. The doctrine: the chapter has the many-but-one ecclesiology of-the-BoM; the same Eph. 4:4-5's-one body, and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Ephesian articulation of-the-many-but-one-Church doctrine. Same one-Church-many-congregations grammar as Acts 9:31's-then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria; 1 Cor. 12:12-13's-for as the body is one, and hath many members; Eph. 4:4-6 — one body, and one Spirit. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the one-Church-many-congregations doctrine — and one-of-the-BoM's-foundational-ecclesiological texts.
And now there were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla. And it came to pass that whosoever were desirous to take upon them the name of Christ, or of God, they did join the churches of God; — Mosiah 25:23
The chapter records the seven-churches-organized. There were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla. The doctrine: the chapter has-seven-churches; the seven-number is the chapter's-quiet-resonance with-Rev. 1:4's-seven churches which are in Asia, Rev. 2-3's-letters-to-the-seven-churches. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Apocalyptic articulation of-the-seven-churches pattern; the seven-as-completeness-of-the-ecclesial-organization, the seven-as-the-fullness-of-the-corporate-Church. Same seven-churches grammar as Rev. 1:4, 11, 20; 2:1, 8, 12, 18; 3:1, 7, 14. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the seven-churches-as-fullness-of-the-Church doctrine.
The phrase take upon them the name of Christ, or of God — the chapter's-precise-naming-formula. The doctrine: the chapter has the Mosiah-period understanding of-the-baptismal-name; the chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Christian explicit-naming-of-Christ as-the-name-taken-on in-baptism. The chapter therefore-anchors the LDS-doctrine of-taking-upon-oneself-the-name-of-Christ in-baptism and-renewing-that-name in-the-sacrament.
And they were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed, and prospered in the land. — Mosiah 25:24
The chapter closes with the Spirit-poured-out and-the-prosperity. They were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed, and prospered in the land. The doctrine: the chapter ends-with-the-Pentecostal-anticipation — the Spirit-poured-out on-the-people-of-God; the same Acts 2:17-18's-I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh pattern. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest pre-Christian articulation of-the-Spirit-poured-out-on-the-corporate-Church providence. Same Spirit-poured-out grammar as Joel 2:28-29's-I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; Acts 2:17-18; Acts 10:44-45's-the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the Spirit-poured-out-on-the-people-of-God providence.
The chapter's architecture
The chapter is four-paneled and operates as the ecclesial-founding of-the-Mosiah-period-Church. Vv. 1–8 establish the gathering and-the-reading-of-the-records; vv. 9–13 establish the joy-and-the-mourning and-the-political-unification under-the-Nephite-name; vv. 14–16 establish the king's-and-the-prophet's-cooperative-address; vv. 17–24 establish the long-deferred-baptisms, the-organization-of-the-seven-churches, and-the-pouring-out-of-the-Spirit. The theological center of gravity is vv. 22–23's they were all one church, yea, even the church of God… and there were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla — the chapter's-master-statement of the one-Church-many-congregations-fully-organized doctrine.
The chapter operates as the BoM's-clearest pre-Pauline-and-pre-Apocalyptic articulation of-the-organized-Church doctrine. The seven-churches, the one-Church-many-congregations, the priests-and-teachers, the king-and-prophet-cooperate, the Spirit-poured-out — every-element of-the-mature-Christian-ecclesiology is-here-anticipated. The chapter is therefore one-of-the-most-foundational-texts in-the-BoM for-the-Restoration's-ecclesiological argument — the BoM's-Church-of-God under-Alma is-the-recovered-pattern that-the-Restoration-restores.
The chapter is also the BoM's-quiet-statement of-the-Mulekite-majority-but-Nephite-throne demographic fact. The repeated note that-the-people-of-Zarahemla (descendants-of-Mulek) were-more-numerous than-the-Nephites is the chapter's-set-up for-the-political-fragility that-will-explode in-Alma-2 (Amlici), Alma-46 (Amalickiah), and-Hel. 1 (Kishkumen) — every-Nephite-civil-war has-the-Mulekite-majority-question as-an-undercurrent. The chapter is the BoM's-quiet-foreshadowing of-the-Nephite-political-fragility throughout-the-rest-of-the-BoM.
How this sits in the literature of its time
Hidden providence
Three threads.
The first is that the chapter's-Mulekite-majority is the BoM's-quiet-providence of-the-Davidic-line-preserved-through-Babylon. The descendants-of-Mulek (son-of-Zedekiah, last-king-of-Judah) are-the-majority of-the-people-who-receive the-Church-of-Alma; the Davidic-line that-Jer. 22:30 said-would-not-prosper sitting-upon-the-throne-of-David is-here-preserved in-the-New-World as-a-people-of-faith, even-if-not-as-a-royal-line. The doctrine: the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the providential-preservation-of-the-Davidic-line through-the-Babylonian-destruction; the chapter is one-of-the-BoM's-most-significant-texts for-the-doctrine-of-the-faithful-remnant. The Christ-who-will-come of-the-tribe-of-Judah and-of-the-house-of-David has-His-Davidic-cousins waiting-for-Him in-the-New-World, gathered-into-Alma's-Church. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the Davidic-line-preserved-through-Babylon providence.
The second is that the chapter's-Amulonite-children-renouncing their-fathers' name is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the doctrine-of-the-name-as-a-choice-not-a-fate. The chapter has the second-generation choosing-the-Nephite-name rather-than-the-Amulonite-name they-inherited; the chapter is therefore one-of-the-BoM's-clearest articulations-of-the-doctrine-of-personal-responsibility-for-the-name-one-bears. The doctrine: the saint is-not-bound by-the-iniquity-of-the-fathers; the saint can-choose to-be-named-by-the-virtue-and-not-by-the-vice. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the choose-thy-name-by-thy-walk providence. The chapter also-anchors the LDS-doctrine of-taking-upon-oneself-the-name-of-Christ in-baptism — the same dynamic-of-choice-of-name operating in-the-Amulonite-children's-renunciation operates in-every-LDS-baptismal-naming.
The third is that the chapter's-seven-churches-but-one-Church is the BoM's-clearest pre-Pauline articulation of-the-one-body-with-many-members ecclesiology. The chapter has the unified-doctrine preserved-by-the-singular-prophetic-source; the chapter has-the-many-congregations as-the-practical-response to-the-many-people, but-the-one-Church as-the-theological-reality. The doctrine: the chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the unity-not-by-uniformity-of-place-but-by-uniformity-of-doctrine-and-source doctrine; the same pattern that-makes-LDS-wards-and-stakes-and-areas one-Church despite-meeting-in-many-buildings on-many-continents. The chapter is one of the BoM's clearest articulations of the one-Church-despite-many-congregations providence — and one-of-the-most-foundational-ecclesiological-texts in-the-BoM.
Where this lands
Three practices.
First, gather, and let the records be read. The chapter's vv. 1, 5–6 doctrine is the king-gathers-the-people and-reads-them-the-records. The practice: the corporate-hearing-of-the-history is the corporate-making-of-the-people; the same Neh. 8 pattern that-Ezra-read-and-the-people-wept. The discipline: be-faithful in-the-Family-Home-Evening, the-stake-conference, the-General-Conference, the-Sacrament-meeting, where-the-corporate-history-of-the-people-of-God is read-aloud; do-not-make-the-mistake of-treating-the-corporate-history as-a-private-individual-matter. The records-of-the-deliverance are-meant-to-be-read-aloud-in-the-gathering.
Second, bear the pain-and-anguish for-the-souls of-those who-are-still-in-rebellion. The chapter's v. 11 doctrine is the gathered-people were-filled-with-pain-and-anguish for-the-welfare-of-the-souls of-the-Lamanites. The practice: the discipline-of-grief for-the-spiritual-condition of-those-who-have-not-yet-believed is the foundation of-every-true-missionary-effort; the discipline-precedes-the-call. The chapter teaches that-the-sons-of-Mosiah's-missionary-charge of-Mosiah-28 was-born-here, in-the-pain-and-anguish of-Mosiah-25:11. The practice: cultivate-the-grief for-the-souls of-those-not-yet-in-the-covenant, and-the-missionary-impulse will-follow. The chapter's-discipline is the agony-for-the-soul of-the-not-yet-believer.
Third, do not despise-the-many-congregations; trust-that-the-one-Church holds-them-together. The chapter's v. 22 doctrine is notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea, even the church of God. The practice: the Church-of-God is-not-diminished by-being-distributed across-many-wards-and-stakes-and-areas; the unity-of-the-Church is in-the-doctrine-and-the-priesthood-source, not-in-the-singular-meeting-place. The chapter's-discipline is the trust-in-the-Church's-unity even-when-the-saint-is-far-from-other-saints; the discipline-of-not-needing-to-see-all-the-saints in-order-to-be-part-of-the-Church. The chapter is the BoM's-clearest-text-on the corporate-trust in-the-Church's-distributed-unity.
