Apocrypha — see D&C 91

Not a sequel to 1 Maccabees but an independent (and more theologically charged) account of the same revolt, written in Greek and abridged from a longer five-volume work by Jason of Cyrene. Chapter 7 — the martyrdom of the mother and her seven sons — contains the clearest pre-Christian statement of bodily resurrection in any Jewish text, and is a major background to the New Testament's resurrection theology. Chapter 12:44–45 — Judas Maccabeus offering prayer and sacrifice for the dead — is also the proof text from which post-mortem ordinances grew in later Christian traditions.
