Also called 4 Ezra. A Jewish apocalypse composed after AD 70, framed as visions given to Ezra in Babylon but really wrestling with the destruction of the Second Temple. Chapters 3–14 contain some of the most striking apocalyptic material outside the canon — the seven visions, the eagle and the lion, the man rising from the sea — and have direct parallels to imagery in Revelation, 2 Nephi, and the Doctrine and Covenants. The Christian additions in chapters 1–2 and 15–16 were added later.
