Life of Adam and Eve

A cluster of related narratives surviving in several languages — the Latin Vita Adae et Evae, the Greek Apocalypse of Moses, the Slavonic Life, the Armenian Penitence of Adam — all drawing on a common Jewish source from the first or second century AD. The story fills in what Genesis 3 leaves unsaid: Adam and Eve's penitence after the expulsion (Adam standing forty days in the Jordan), Eve's first-person narration of the temptation, the conflict with Satan, the births of Cain and Abel, Adam's vision of the future, and the burial of Adam by the archangels. Moses 4–5 covers much of the same narrative ground from a different angle, and the Vita's account of Adam in the waters is a major background to early Christian baptismal theology. The Latin recension is the most complete and is followed here.
